State Profile Maps Explained
How was the data collected to populate each State Profile?
The data used to populate each State Profile was collected from January 1 to December 31, 2021, using various sources. PrEP-prescribing locations were obtained from the national PrEP Locator database, and pharmacy locations were sourced from state Boards of Pharmacy. HIV case data, represented by 5-year HIV incidence per 100,000 persons, was collected from AIDSVu, with data provided at both the zip code and county levels.
Are there any limitations in interpreting the data in the State Profiles?
There are limitations to consider when interpreting the data in the State Profiles. These include variations in data granularity, as some states provided HIV data at the county level while others provided it at the zip code level, potentially affecting the accuracy and comparability of the maps. Additionally, the study did not account for the internal capacity of clinicians or pharmacists at PrEP-prescribing locations and pharmacies, which could influence service availability. There might also be underestimations of pharmacy locations due to missing local addresses and overestimations of PrEP-prescribing locations if tele-PrEP services were included.
